Memorabile. Ipermoda

An exhibition at the MAXXI – National Museum of 21st century arts and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana
Curated by Maria Luisa Frisa
27 November 2024 – 27 April 2025

Main sponsor: Fondazione Bvlgari

Memorabile. Ipermoda, produced by MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo (National Museum of 21st century arts) in collaboration with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and designed and curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, ran from 27 November 2024 to 27 April 2025.

The exhibition grew out of reflections on fashion and the resulting assumption of responsibility, which in our times is required in a creative and economic framework involving design practices, use of increasingly sophisticated technologies and protagonists and supporting roles. The exhibition presents fashion as an instrument that investigates the present and is responsive to all sorts of input: cultural, social, political and technological. It does so by employing a whole constellation of objects - clothes, accessories, archive materials, images and videos – arranged to create unexpected dialogues, such as the one between haute couture and independent fashion. The exhibition offers visions that explore themes such as the relationship between fashion and time, archive management, the strategic role of art directors in big luxury goods groups and the crucial challenge of sustainability. Every creation on display brings a story with it to form a collective narration combining creativity, awareness and imagination and asking new questions. The choice of title - Memorabile – alludes to fashion’s vocation for being extraordinary, in a dialogue that necessarily considers and admits its opposite, the ordinary. While Ipermoda, a term derived from ideas and theses in Timothy Morton’s Hyperobjects, accentuates the sense of Memorabile by pointing up fashion’s peculiar need to reach out beyond its own confines.
Memorabile signals the capacity of a curator’s project/operation to render memorable the way in which fashion and its forms represent the contemporary world and the themes being played out in it.

The exhibition was held in Galleria 5 with settings designed by Supervoid: the dialogue between materials and colours produced a sophisticated and contemporary atmosphere in which every element, from the geometry of the spaces to the interior coatings, contributed to an experience bringing together architecture and fashion.
