FASHION AND ENVIRONMENT: GUCCI PRESENTS THE METAL FREE LEATHER

“Let the Decaloque live”, reads the last point of the Manifesto of Sustainability for Italian Fashion, promoted and developed by CNMI. A commitment and at the same time an invitation to the fashion houses that have adhered to it, knowing that the great challenge for the future of the Made in Italy is sustainability, in order to safeguard the policy of beauty and great craftsmanship that has no competitors in the field.

The news of an important innovation that follows this path arrives today from one of the great protagonists of Italian fashion that have adhered to the Manifesto, a testimony of how this participation is a commitment, strongly motivated and concrete. Gucci has announced - with the words of its President and CEO Patrizio Di Marco - the birth of a methodology that reduces the impact of tanning on the environment. “Coherent with the sustainable approach that we are implementing for years, now an integral part of the DNA of this firm, Gucci is the first brand in the luxury sector to take the road of metal free tanning”.

After months of research, in collaboration with the tannery Blutonic (51% owned by Gucci), thus creating an exemplary vertical integration, it was obtained a process that - by using a tanning agent of organic origin - gives as a result, heavy metal free, tanned leather, soft and natural looking, according to the Gucci tradition. A long and enviable tradition since it is able to gamble and invest in research and respect an ethical version of fashion, that is more and more challenged, by the low-cost retail chains.

Furthermore, the absence of heavy metals in the tanning agent, allows to shorten the working process, thus resulting in a saving of water and a good 20% of electrical energy, not to mention the better quality of wastewater.

The appointment with the metal-free tanned leather is in the Gucci stores for October 2013, where - made to order - you will be able to buy the iconic Bamboo Bag, while waiting that the process can be applied to other iconic leathers and appear on the catwalks of the upcoming collections.
