Growing Roots – 15 years of the Furla Awards

From 5 March to 12 April 2015, Palazzo Reale in Milan is hosting Growing Roots – 15 anni del Premio Furla (Growing Roots – 15 years of the Furla Awards), a Fondazione Furla exhibition curated by Chiara Bertola, Giacinto di Pietrantonio and Yuko Hasegawa.

On display in the rooms of the “Appartamento dei Principi” (Princes’ Apartment) are the works of the winners of the ten editions of the Premio Furla: Sislej Xhafa (2000), Lara Favaretto (2001), Sissi (2002), Massimo Grimaldi (2003), Pietro Roccasalva (2005), Luca Trevisani (2007), Alberto Tadiello (2009), Matteo Rubbi (2011), Chiara Fumai (2013), and the duo Maria Iorio and Raphael Cuomo (2015).

Fondazione Furla decided to celebrate the 15th birthday of the Awards in Milan, Italian and international capital of contemporary creativity and an important showcase for young talent. Enjoying the support of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the exhibition also marks the beginning, in the year of the EXPO, of collaboration between Premio Furla, the Municipality of Milan and Palazzo Reale.

“When the Premio Furla was set up in 2000, it was a moment in which art awards and opportunities for young artists were practically non-existent, so our project was pioneering and visionary,” recalls Giovanna Furlanetto, president of Fondazione Furla and Furla S.p.a. “Fifteen years on, we can now say that the passion, commitment and consistency that have gone into our work have put down deep roots and borne fruit.”

“The exhibition will illustrate the quality and diversity of Italian art, which is proving its relevance today by asserting the value of differences, necessary now more than ever for the redefinition of identities in a globalized world. Painting, sculpture, installations, videos, performances, drawings, sounds, and antique and contemporary materials are the elements used in the works to go on display at the exhibition, all of which reflecting both the Premio Furla and its history and the social and cultural context in which these works were created,” added Chiara Bertola, creator and curator of the Premio Furla since its foundation.
